Bachata is a passionate dance with roots in the Dominican Republic. From its origins to its current global popularity, Bachata is about more than just steps – it’s about emotions. I remember the first time I experienced Bachata – the music hit me right in the heart, and the beautiful movements made me feel an immediate connection to the dance. To understand why Bachata has such power, let’s take a closer look at its roots, both as a music and a dance form. We dance Bachata both in pairs and alone, even though it is primarily a couple’s dance.
Have you ever experienced how music can touch your heart and inspire movement?
Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, inspired by bolero, son cubano and merengue. The music was long looked down upon, but in the 1980s it gained wider acceptance, especially thanks to artists such as Juan Luis Guerra. In the 1990s, bachata had its global breakthrough, and in the 2000s the genre developed further with influences from R&B, pop and hip-hop. Today, bachata is one of the most popular Latin American genres in the world. Artists such as Romeo Santos and Prince Royce have been instrumental in modernizing and popularizing the genre globally, and their music has had a major influence on the development of both sound and dance.
Have you listened to Bachata before? If so, what do you like about the music?
In parallel with the development of music, Bachata dance has also emerged as one of the world's most popular Latin American dance forms. Originally a simple and playful social dance, it has evolved over time into several distinct styles. The dance places great emphasis on partner work, body movements and musicality. Many dancers now mix elements from different styles to create their own unique way of dancing.
How do you express emotions through dance?
• Dominican / Traditional Bachata: Original Dominican style with playful footwork and strong musical understanding.
• Bachata Sensual: Soft, flowing and sensual movements and close partner contact.
• Bachata Moderna: More technical and energetic with elements from other dance forms.
• Bachata Fusion: My favorite style, where I combine footwork, sensual and elegant movements, and traditional elements to interpret the music freely.
We also have other styles such as Bachata, Bachata Elegante, Bachata Urban etc. Plenty to choose from in other words.
Which Bachata style resonates with you the most?
I chose Bachata Fusion because I love the music, the variety and the tempo. It is the style I have danced the shortest time, but the one I have been focusing on the most recently. Bachata Fusion gives me the freedom to combine technique, musicality and emotion in a way that feels completely natural to me.
In the World Championships I will compete in solo Bachata (meaning I will dance alone on stage), so I will have the opportunity to show my personal interpretation of the music.
For me, it means challenging myself every day – becoming stronger, more expressive and more confident. It's not just about technique, but about daring to give it your all – being vulnerable, authentic and letting the audience really feel what I'm conveying.
What does that mean to you?
Bachata is more than just a dance; it is a language of emotions, a path to self-expression and a way to connect with both music and people.
From traditional rhythms to modern fusions, Bachata is a dance that is constantly evolving, while maintaining its deep, passionate essence. Through Bachata we can express joy, longing, and love, and in my journey towards the World Cup, it is precisely this force that drives me forward. Whether you dance Bachata for fun, as an art form, or as a way to express yourself, there is no doubt that this dance has something for everyone.
